Dhaka – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that certain individuals and political quarters are trying to serve their own political interests by spreading confusion and creating disorder over the referendum and the July Charter.

He called upon all to remain alert against such ill efforts.

“Some individuals and political parties are now trying to divert the referendum in a different direction and creating disorder by misleading the country’s people,” he said while addressing a gathering in the south-western district of Jessore on Monday.

He said everyone must remain alert about those who are trying to divert the verdict of the referendum in a different direction and representing the July Charter in a wrong way for their own political interests.

The Prime Minister, however, did not name any individual or political party during his address as he traveled to the southern district to inaugurate the re-excavation work of the Ulashi Canal in Sharsha upazila.

He said that if they succeed in creating chaos in the country for their own political gain, the government’s programs undertaken for the people will be disrupted.

He mentioned the schemes that his government has taken up, such as the Family Card for women, the Farmer Card for peasants, canal excavation programs, initiatives to create employment for unemployed youths, reopening closed mills and factories, healthcare services in villages, and tree plantation, among others.

“If these programs are implemented successfully, positive changes will come in the country,” calling the people to play a responsible role so that the country’s progress is not hindered.

He added that the July Charter signed by political parties will be fully implemented in phases.

Reminding the audience about the mass uprising of August 5, Tarique Rahman said: “The people have already proven that they do not accept any attempt to ignore their will. Just as the people gave an appropriate response on August 5, they will respond in the same way in the future if anyone tries to play with their fate.”

“Before our eyes, many countries in the world have changed their fate over the past 50 years. The condition of Singapore in 1971 was worse than ours, and where have they reached in 50 years? If they can do it, why can’t we? Insha’Allah, we can too. The people of this country can do it,” he said.
