Dhaka – Security has been beefed up at all airports in Bangladesh after police headquarters reported threats of possible militant attacks nationwide on important installations.
“The highest security alert has been issued at eight airports after police headquarters issued the warming on possible attack,” Air Vice Marshal Mostafa Mahmood Siddiq, chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, told a news conference on Monday in Dhaka.
Being classified as Key Point Installations (KPIs), airports are always under tight security measures. But the security has been intensified further after receiving a letter from the police.
Police headquarters on Thursday said that members of a banned extremist organization might carry out attacks on key point installations, including the parliament building in Dhaka.
The police warning called for heightened surveillance and stronger security measures nationwide after the security officials intercepted conversations of a few individuals plotting disability.
The police, however, did not mention the name of the outlawed organization.
Bangladesh currently has eight airports in operation. Three of them are international airports located in the capital Dhaka, in the port city of Chattogram in the south-east, and in the north eastern city of Sylhet.
Five other airports cater passengers in domestic routes.
