Dhaka – Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is likely to contest the Dhaka-17 constituency in the next parliamentary election, according to party officials.

The election, for 300 parliamentary seats, is scheduled for February 12, 2026.

ABM Abdus Sattar, Personal Secretary to the BNP Chairperson, on Sunday collected a nomination form on Tarique Rahman’s behalf from the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner’s Office.

The deadline for submission is Monday, December 29, 2025.

BNP media cell officials said Mr. Rahman, the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, is most likely to contest from Dhaka-17, which comprises upscale areas such as Gulshan, Banani, and Baridhara.

The constituency was one of three in the capital that the BNP had initially left vacant for its electoral allies.

BNP sources indicated that Mr. Rahman applied to become a voter in Dhaka-17 on Saturday, and senior party leaders subsequently urged him to stand from the seat.

This prompted Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) Chairman Andalib Rahman Partha, whose party is a component of the BNP-led alliance, to step aside. Partha will now contest from the Bhola-1 constituency instead.

Tarique Rahman is also set to contest from Bogura-6, his ancestral constituency.

Rahman returned from exile in the United Kingdom on December 25 and is currently leading the party in the absence of his mother, who is undergoing hospital treatment in Dhaka.
