Dhaka – The health condition of former prime minister Khaleda Zia remains critical and complex, according to her personal physician, Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday night, Dr. Hossain said that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief, who has been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka since last month, is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as her condition remains “critical and complex”.
Her physical said she has not shown improvement, and she is passing through a critical phase.
“It cannot be said that her condition has improved. She is going through a critical moment,” Dr. Hossain said.
He explained that Khaleda Zia’s health deteriorated following her admission on November 23 for breathing difficulties caused by a lung infection.
Initially placed in a cabin, she was later moved to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) before being transferred to the ICU due to further complications.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, visited the hospital on Saturday.
Dr. Zubaida Rahman, also a member of the Medical Board, participated in a meeting of the expert medical team, which includes specialists from the UK, the USA, and Bangladesh.
Dr. Hossain informed that the Medical Board has unanimously decided to continue her treatment at Evercare Hospital. The expert team is monitoring her condition around the clock, and treatment is being administered based on their advice.
On behalf of Tarique Rahman and his family, Dr. Hossain sought prayers from the nation for Khaleda Zia’s recovery. He also expressed gratitude to the hospital’s doctors, nurses, and paramedics for their efforts.
Addressing party leaders and activists, he urged them to remain vigilant to ensure the treatment process is not disrupted. “If, by the grace of Almighty Allah and the efforts of the doctors, she overcomes this crisis, we will receive good news,” he added.
