Dhaka – One of Bangladesh’s popular singers Shammi Akhtar (Shamima Akhtar) died on Tuesday in Dhaka at the age of 62.
Akhtar, noted for her Bangla modern song, breathed her last at around 4 pm when she was being taken to a city hospital, family sources said.
The singer had been suffering from breast cancer for a few years, Akramul Islam, the husband of the singer, said.
Akhtar left behind husband, a son, a daughter and a host of friends, relatives, well-wishers and admirers to mourn her death.
Popular among her songs Dhaka Shohor Aisa Amar Asha Furaichhe, Ami Jemon Achhi Temon Robo Bow Hobonare and Bhalobasleo Sobar Sathe Ghor Badha Jaina won the hearts of millions of audiences.
Shamima Akhtar won Bangladesh National Film Award in 2010.
