Dhaka – Bangladesh has asked India to repatriate former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheik Hasina as she was convicted in a case of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by a court in Dhaka.

Hours after the verdict was pronounced, Bangladeshi interim administration in a press statement called upon India to extradite Hasina and her former cabinet colleague Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was also sentenced to death for the same offences.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said that both Hasina and Kamal have been found guilty and sentenced for murders by the International Crimes Tribunal.

“Granting refuge to these individuals convicted of crimes against humanity by any other country would be an extremely unfriendly act and a disregard for justice,” it said.

The statement called upon Indian authorities to hand those convicted individuals promptly to Bangladesh.

It is an obligation for India to repatriate such individuals under the existing extradition treaty signed between Bangladesh and India in 2013.

However, extradition may be refused if the offence of which it is requested is an offence of political character.

Dhaka, earlier in December, formally wrote to New Delhi requesting the return of Hasina to Bangladesh. New Delhi did not respond to the letter yet.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain on Monday told reporters that his office would write once again shortly to Indian authorities requesting her return.
