Dhaka The interim government enhanced security in Dhaka and its adjoining districts on Wednesday to quell a recent spate of violence linked to a banned political party, officials said.

Fourteen platoons of paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troops have been deployed in Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur, according to BGB spokesman Shariful Islam.

He specified that twelve platoons—each containing 30 troops—are stationed in the capital, while one platoon each will patrol Narayanganj and Gazipur. The deployment is intended to bolster regular police forces.

In a separate directive, the government instructed all airports to deploy maximum security personnel to ensure the safety of passengers and public facilities.

These measures follow a series of incidents involving crude bomb attacks and vehicle arson across the country.

The violence erupted after the banned Awami League party—led by deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and outlawed by the interim administration in May — announced a three-day action plan, including a nationwide lockdown on Thursday.

Hasina, who was ousted during a mass uprising last year, is being tried in absentia by the International Crimes Tribunal. She is accused of crimes against humanity for the brutal suppression of the protests, which a UN estimate indicates killed approximately 1,400 people.

The Tribunal is scheduled to set the verdict date on Thursday, with a ruling expected later this month.
