Dhaka – Security forces fired tear gas and sound grenades to disperse a crowd of several hundred people who forced their way into the venue for the signing of a landmark political charter.
The document aims to promise carrying out a comprehensive state reforms agenda and legitimize last year’s uprising that ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The group, who identify as “July Fighters,” had initially gathered at Manik Mia Avenue before breaking through a gate to enter the South Plaza of the National Parliament building.
The venue was under heavy guard by army troops, border guards, and police for the ceremony, where major political parties were scheduled to sign the “July National Charter 2025” in the presence of Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim administration.
Security personnel first attempted to negotiate with the crowd, but the protesters were adamant about staying. Many argued that the interim administration could not sign such a crucial document without their inclusion.
The situation escalated into a scuffle between security forces and protesters occupying the front rows, prompting police to use force.
Footage from the scene showed protesters vandalizing police cars and other vehicles, setting other objects on fire, and hurling bricks and stones at officers.
Police responded with tear gas and baton charges. To regain control, they also deployed sound grenades, which eventually caused the protesters to retreat.
However, they continued to throw projectiles from a distance.
Protesters also set fire to tents in front of the Parliament’s south gate and at several points on the main road.
After nearly an hour of clashes, police finally secured the area.
Earlier, in the morning, individuals identifying as ‘July Martyr Families and the Injured’ had occupied the stage, voicing various demands.
