Dhaka – The newly elected government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is preparing to launch a nationwide crackdown on crime, aiming to restore order after what officials describe as a period of deteriorating law and enforcement under the previous interim administration.

The move comes after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a landslide victory in last month’s parliamentary elections.

In his first major policy push, Prime Minister Rahman has prioritized the restoration of law and order, vowing to tackle the surge in criminal activities that has plagued the country.

On Wednesday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed outlined the government’s plan, announcing that a comprehensive anti-crime drive is in the final stages of preparation.

The operation will target a rise in reported incidents of mugging, extortion, and violent crime.

“We are preparing comprehensive lists of extortionists and criminals in an unbiased way from across the country, starting from Dhaka,” the minister told reporters following a high-level meeting at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters.

The meeting was attended by senior DMP officials and officers-in-charge (OCs) from all 50 police stations under the capital’s jurisdiction.

Reiterating that establishing the rule of law is the government’s top priority, Minister Ahmed emphasized that the upcoming drive would be conducted fairly, without bias, and in strict accordance with the law.

He called upon officers to carry out their duties with professionalism and integrity to ensure public safety across the capital and beyond.

The Minister expressed confidence that coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies and the government would successfully curb criminal activities and extortion, ultimately reinforcing public confidence in the justice system.
