Some 150,000 police personnel will go through a training  for Bangladesh’s next general election, said a senior official on Monday, despite the election’s specific date was not fixed yet.

The interim administration headed by Muhammad Yunus had earlier hinted that the election was possible by February although he in a televised address to the nation had announced that the election would be held in the first half of April 2026.

Yunus at a meeting with top law enforcement officials on Monday decided that policemen would be trained for three months from September, said his press secretary Shafiqul Alam. The chief adviser’s meeting also reviewed the current law and order situation at the meeting held at his official Jamuna residence in Dhaka.

Alam said emphasis has been given on strengthening coordination among law enforcing agencies, including the army troops who are now working in aid to civil administration in maintaining order, ahead of the elections.

Some 60,000 army troops will be deployed during the election.

The interim administration has taken over in August 8, 2024, three days after the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted by a mass uprising on August 5. Haisna has since been exiled in India.
