Dhaka – The government has appointed internationally acclaimed human rights activist Irene Khan as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York.
She will enjoy the benefits, perks, and privileges of the rank of a State Minister, according to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Wednesday.
The notification states that during her tenure in this position, Khan will receive the rank, salary, allowances, and other associated benefits of a Minister of State.
Irene Khan will succeed Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, the current Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations.
Khan currently serves as the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
Prior to this, she served as Secretary-General of Amnesty International, the UK-based international human rights organization.
