Dhaka – The body of Sharif Osman Hadi, a key leader of last year’s mass uprising, arrived in Dhaka on Friday from Singapore, where he died in a hospital on Thursday night.
Hadi, the convenor of the Inqilab Mancha, was shot by masked assailants on a motorcycle in Dhaka’s Paltan area on December 12. After a week of treatment, he was pronounced dead. Initially treated in Dhaka, he was airlifted to Singapore for advanced care on Monday.
A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying his remains landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 5:45 pm. on Friday. His body will be kept at a hospital mortuary until his funeral, which is scheduled for Saturday after Zuhr prayers at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka.
Hadi’s death has sparked violent protests across Bangladesh, with demonstrators demanding the immediate arrest of his killers. He had been a vocal critic of Indian influence in Bangladesh and was planning to run for parliament from a Dhaka constituency in the upcoming election, scheduled for February 2026.
Protesters vandalized and set fire to the headquarters of two newspaper outlets in Dhaka, among other acts of unrest. In response, the interim administration headed by Mohammad Yunus has declared a day of mourning for Saturday.
