By a correspondent, Khagrachhari – The direct road connection to the Sajek tourist district has been severed after a section of the Khagrachhari-Sajek road, near Machalong Bazar, a crucial transit point, was submerged due to torrential rain, officials said on Tuesday.

Movement of all motorized vehicles has been suspended since Tuesday morning as a result of monsoon rain for the last couple of days, said Shirin Akhtar, Upazial Nirbahi Officer of Baghaichari.

She said that stranded tourists at Sajek, one of the country’s most picturesque tourist destinations, are being transported via alternative means.

Akhtar stated that continuous heavy rainfall and hill torrents over the past few days have submerged the road in the Machalong Bazar area. The main bridge over the Machalong stream was also submerged.

She said water was flowing about four to five feet above the sloped road and bridge, which would impede vehicular movement.

The UNO added that all tourist vehicles traveling from Machalong to Sajek have been suspended. Many stranded tourists are crossing the flooded section using bamboo rafts or boats.

Those who came in private vehicles have returned to Sajek. Vehicular movement will resume once the water recedes, she said.
