Dhaka –Two persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the attack on the leader of Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU), police said on Monday.
At least 24 persons were wounded after a group of people allegedly belonged to Muktijuddher Mancha carried out the attack on Nurul Haque Nur, the DUCSU vice president, and his associates on the university campus Sunday.
Officer Abdul Baten said the detectives arrested Al Mamun, general secretary of the Mancha, and its Dhaka University chapter leader Yasir Arafat.
The arrest came hours after Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader told reporters that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered legal action against the attackers.
Earlier on Sunday night, AL Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak visited the injured persons at Dhaka Medical College Hospital as per instruction of the prime minister, the minister said.
“Whoever is involved with the attack will be brought to justice,” Quader quoted the Prime Minister as saying.
The minister said the incident was embarrassing for the ruling party.
The activists Muktijuddho Moncho, formed recently comprising members of the ruling Awami League’s student wing Chhatra League, beat up Nur and others on the campus.
They also vandalized the office of the DUCSU VP. This group earlier locked the VP’s room and asked Nur not to come to his office. The group is reportedly backed by DUCSU Assistant General Secretary and BCL leader Saddam Hussain.
Six of the wounded students, including Nur, are still undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The rest were released after primary treatment.
