Twelve to walk to gallows for murdering college student in Tangail

Dhaka – A special court in Tangail on Tuesday sentenced 12 people to death for killing a college student in the central Bangladeshi district, officials said.

The district court of Waheduzzaman Sikder pronounced the verdict in a crowded courtroom against the accused who murdered the student, Rabiul Islam Rajan, 24, over a land dispute in Bhuyanpur sub-district in 2014.

The names of the convicts are:  Mozid, Abdul Mazid, Saidul, Maznu, Momin, Nizam, Abu Bakar, Hanu, Nurul Islam, Babu, Siraj and Wahab.

All but four absconders – Mozid, Abdul Mazid, Hanu and Nurul Islam – were present on the dock when the court passed the verdict.

The 24-year old student was hacked by the accused in Bhuyanpur on April 13, 2014 over the land dispute, according to the prosecution.

Rajon died on the following day after he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital prompting  the mother of the victim, Shahida Begum to filed a murder case with Bhuyanpur Police Station.

Eighteen people were initially accused in the case, but the investigators pressed charges against 12 men of the locality.
