Three killed in Rangpur road crash

Rangpur – At least three people have been killed in a road accident in northern Bangladeshi district of Rangpur, said police on Thursday.

The mishap took place on Thakurgaon-Pirganj highway in Pirganj sub-district in morning, leaving a man and two women dead on the scene, said officer Hafizar Rahman.

The Thakurgaon-bound bus of Ruposhi Paribahan from Dhaka plunged into a roadside pond in the area 225 kilometers away from the capital Dhaka, as the bus driver lost control over the steering, he said.

Score others who sustained injures were undergoing treatment at a local health complex.

The driver managed to flee the spot after the accident, Rahman said.

The Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh said that some 6,055 people were killed and 16,000 others suffered injuries in 4,312 road mishaps in Bangladesh last year,

A total of 8,642 people were reportedly killed and 21,855 others injured in road crashes across the country in 2015.

According to the association nearly 0.3 million unfit vehicles and 1 million locally made three-wheelers like Nasiman, Kariman, Bhatbhati and easy-bikes were mainly responsible for the road accidents.

Lax monitoring, reckless driving, overloading, disregarding traffic rules, engineering faults in road constructions and consuming drugs before driving are dubbed as the reasons for accidents.
