Three detained over attacks on UNO Wahida Khanam

Three suspects have been detained in connection with the attack on a government official in northern Dinajpur district, police said on Friday.

One of those detained are learnt to be the leader of Jubo League, the youth wing of the ruling Awami League party, police said adding that they were picked up as suspect and were being quizzed over the Thursday’s attack.

Wahida Khanam, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Ghoraghat sub-district and her father were critically wounded after unknown assailants attacked her official residence in the Ghoraghat township on Thursday. Khanam was airlifted to Dhaka for improved treatment. Her condition is stated to be stable after surgery.   

Police said they picked up Jahangir Alam of Kushigari, Asadul Islam of Sagarpur and Masud Rana of Singra village of Ghoraghat in connection with the attacks. They were being interrogated by the crime-busting Rapid Action Battalion, said officer Saiful Islam of the local police station.

Jahangir is the leader of local unit of Jubo League in the sub-district. The suspects were arrested by different unit of law enforcement agencies from different parts of the district, said Amirul Islam, the officer in charge of Ghoraghat police station.

Wahida is being treated at the Institute of Neuroscience and Hospital (NINH) in Dhaka while her father Omar Ali at northern Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

A case was filed against unknown criminals who stormed into the UNO’s residence and attacked her. An investigation committee was also formed by the divisional commissioner of Rangpur.
