Several thousand residents rendered homeless as a fire ravaged their shanties at a slum in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, firefighters said on Monday.
More than 200 shanties have been destroyed after the fire broke out at the slum called “Sattala Bosti” in Dhaka’s Mohakhali neighbourhood in the morning, fire-fighting official Kamrul Hasan said.
Firefighters took more than six hours to completely douse the flame as they employed 18 fire-fighting engines to control the fire. No casualty was reported from the accident site.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence department launched an investigation into the accident to determine the reason behind it. They suspect illegal connection of cooking gas might have caused the accident.
The slum experienced at least five more fire incidents in the past years.
