Tens of thousands turn up to seek eternal peace for Syed Ashraf

Dhaka – Thousands of people including colleagues, supporters and well-wishers sought eternal blessing for the departed soul of Syed Ashraful Islam as the first funeral prayers of the celebrated politician held at the parliament premises of the parliament building on Sunday.

Ashraful Islam, the public administration affairs minister, died of lung cancer at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok on Thursday (January 3, 2019) at the age of 66.

His body was brought back to Dhaka on Saturday and was kept at the mortuary of the Combine Military Hospital.

People from all walks of life thronged to Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban premises as his coffin was brought there for the first funeral prayers at 10.30am. He was given the “Guard of Honor” on after the prayers were completed.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid their tributes to the eminent politician.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the leader of the House, placed wreath on the coffin of her cabinet colleague subsequently. Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Deputy Speaker M Fazley Rabbi Mia placed floral wreaths there.

The President talked to the bereaved family members.

President Hamid also offered prayers where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasaina, Speaker, deputy speaker, ministers, lawmakers, senior leaders of Awami League and other political parties, well-wishers, officials and parliament’s employees attended.

Hasina, also president of Awami League, placed a floral wreath on behalf of her party. Syed Ashraful was a former general secretary of the party.

Body of the most reverent politician of contemporary Bangladesh was then flown to Kishoreganj where people from his constituencies will attend the second funeral prayers at Sholakia Eid Congregation Ground. Hundreds of thousands of people from Mymensingh division thronged to the ground to attend the prayers and have the last glimpse to the beloved politician.

The coffin will also be taken to Mymensingh, where he passed his student life and was a student leader, for the third funeral prayers.  Then the body will be brought back to Dhaka for burial at Banani graveyard in the afternoon.

Syed Ashraful Islam, who left Bangladesh for the United Kingdom after his father Syed Nazrul Islam was assassinated in the jail in 1975, elected lawmaker with AL ticked in 1996 for the first time. He contested for the election on his return from UK.
