Staff Correspondent in Dhaka,
At least ten people drowned and many went missing after a boat capsized in a river in northern Netrokona district on Wednesday.
Police and local government officials said that the boat carrying more than 35 passengers sank after another boat hit it from one of the sides on Gumai river in Kolmakanda upazila.
Upazila chairman Abdul Khalek said local residents rushed to the scene soon after the accident and retrieved bodies of five women and five children from the river.
He assumed 15 to 20 people might have gone missing as there were no official records of the passengers. Members of the fire service and civil defence department launched an operation to find the missing passengers.
The scene is nearly 160 kilometers north-east of the capital Dhaka.
District administration officials visited the spot to supervise the rescue operation.
