Dhaka – A suspected militant captured with cash worth about Tk 3,000,000 died in a hospital in Savar, an outskirt of Dhaka, police said on Sunday.

The Abdur Rahman Ainal, 30, an activist of Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh, was injured after he jumped from a building as the members of the Rapid Action Battalion raided his home in Bashundhara area of Ashulia’s Baipail on Saturday evening.

Doctors at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar declared him dead. The lawmen also picked up Ainal’s wife and three children and sized the cash, arms and other equipment.

The battalion officials said that the Ainal was one of the financers of the JMB, a banned militant outfit responsible for a number of terrorist attacks in Bangladesh.

Mufti Mahmud Khan, a spokesman of the battalion, said he was the main financier of the New-JMB, a term the law enforcement agencies brand the militants.

Ainal played a vital role in financing all the attacks the militants carried out recently in Bangladesh, the officer said.

The Saturday evening’s raid came after the law enforcement killed eleven suspected militants, including a leader of the outfit’s military wing, in Tangail and Gazipur districts.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal identified the militant leader as Akash.

The militant group, banned in 2005 after it carried out a number of attacks on public offices, was also blamed for the deadly July 1 attack on a restaurant that left 20 civilians, mostly foreign nationals, dead in Dhaka.

Two security personnel and six militants were also killed when army commandos stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka’s Gulshan diplomatic area to rescue the hostages.

Police have killed at least 14 other suspected militants, including a Bangladeshi-born Canadian man, in the last three months as part of counter-terrorism raids launched after the cafe attack.
