Suspected pirate killed in Khulna ‘gunfight’

Dhaka – A suspected leader of a pirate gang operating in the Sundarbans forest was gunned down in a battle with the law enforcements in the south-western Bangladeshi district of Khulna, police said on Thursday.

The gunfight occurred in Sukhukpara char area of the east Sundarbans department in Sharankhola range in the early hours of the day leaving Belal Mir, one of the members of the gang, dead on the scene.

Rapid Action Battalion officer Major Adnan Kabir said the suspect was member of locally known gang ‘Shams Bahini’.

Acting on information, the battalion launched the operation in the area in the early hours of the day. The pirate gang fired guns on lawmen sensing their presence while the battalion men retaliated with bullets.

Five firearms and 77 bullets were seized at the spot.

Islam was wanted in several cases, including for robbery and abduction, said the RAB officer.
