Suspected JMB commander killed in Kustia ‘gunfight’

Kustia- A suspected key leader of a banned Islamist outfit in western Bangladeshi district of Kustia has been killed in a gunfight with law enforcers, said police on Monday.

The gun battle occurred at Kaburhat area in Sadar sub-district of the district at 2:30am of the day, leaving Kalu Mollah, 30, a leader of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh, killed, officer Sabbirul Islam said.

Mollah was the regional commander of the banned militant. He hailed from Khazanagar area of the district town.

Police said the suspect was killed in the gunfight that ensued after the criminals fired guns on the lawmen during an anti-militant raid. The police had information that the members of the banned group were planning for act of sabotage in different important places of the district, said the officer.

The regional chief of the banned operative dead on the scene while the other members managed to flee the, Islam added.

Sub- inspector (SI) Halim, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Anwar Rashid and 4 others policemen were injured during the gunfight, said the police officer.

A foreign-made pistol, two bullets and three sharp weapons were seized from the spot.
