Suspected Islamist arrested over murder of Bangladeshi blogger, publisher

Dhaka – Bangladeshi security forces on Saturday said they arrested a leader of a banned militant organization for his alleged involvement in murders of a secularist blogger and a publisher in 2015, police said.

Detective Branch of police picked up Khairul Jamil alias Rifat, a leader of the banned Ansarullah Bangla Team from Dhaka’s Kamalapur area on Friday night, police spokesman Masudur Rahman said.

Police said Rifat was involved in the murder of blogger Niladri Chattapadhay and publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan, owner of Jagriti Prokashani.

Faysal Arfin Deepon, whose firm Jagriti had published the work of blogger Avijit Roy, was stabbed to death in his office on October 31, 2015.

August 7, 2015 – attackers entered the apartment of blogger Niladri Chattapadhay and chopped him to death in Dhaka’s Khilgaon area.

Militant Islamist groups have claimed responsibility for the killings, calling the victims enemies of Islam and Allah.
