Six persons have been arrested for allegedly involved in gang rape of a woman in a moving bus in the Ashulia outskirt of Dhaka, police said on Saturday.
The five of the suspects have been remanded in custody for three days for interrogation over the alleged rape that occurred on Friday night when the 22-year old woman was alone travelling by the bus to her home in Narayanganj from Manikganj.
The prime accused Sumon Mia, the driver of the bus, confessed to his crime before a magistrate, said police officer Mezbah Uddin Ahmed.
Noticed by the scream of the woman, who works for a garment factory, the officers on patrol rescued her from Ashulia cattle market area on the night, and detained the accused on the spot.
As victim file a case against the suspects, identified as Saiful Islam, 40, Aryan, 18, Shaju, 20, Sohag, 25, Manwar, 24 and Sumon Mia, 24, the police formally shown them arrested in the case and sent to court Saturday.
The accused are transport workers doing various jobs in local buses ply in Abdullahpur-Nabinagar route, police said.
They said the victim was on her way to Narayanganj from her sister’s home in Manikganj. The accused took the woman aboard a bus of the New Gram Bangla Company at Nabinagar towards Tongi.
The bus staffers dropped all passengers but the woman off the bus on the way and head back to Nabinagar and raped her in the moving vehicle, police said according to the complaint filed with Ashulia police station.
The victim was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for necessary examination.
