Six killed as ambulance crashes on van near Padma Bridge

At least six people have been killed after an ambulance hit a parked van near the Padma Bridge in the southern district of Shariatpur, police and rescuers said on Tuesday.

The ambulance hit the van at around 4 am at the Jazira end of the Bridge, killing all the six passengers, including a patient who was being brought to Dhaka from Barisal Medical College Hospital, on the scene, officer Abu Naeem Mohammad Mofazzel Haq said.

Poor visibility might have caused the accident, the officer said according to the primary information obtained from the scene.

Rescuers from the Fire Service and Civil Defence department rushed to the scene and recovered the bodies, Md Selim Miah of the department said.

The rescuers identified the bodies as Jahanara Begum, 55, the patient, her daughter Lutfun Nahar Lima, 20, their relative and health worker Fazle Rabbi, 28, driver Rabiul Islam, 29, his associate Jilani, 28, and Masud Rana, a Barisal-based journalist.

Police seized the ambulance, front of which has been badly damaged. The van was also confiscated, but its driver could not be found.
