Sincere election commission holds credible polls

Dhaka – Fair election is possible if the election commission discharges duty with utmost sincerity and honesty, President Abdul Hamid said on Thursday.

The President came up with the remarks after a delegation of Islami Okiya Jote, a party campaign for Islamic Bangladesh, met him as part of his series of talks with political parties to reconstitute the election commission.

Hamid also underscored the need for a fair political atmosphere and consensus among the political parties to hold a credible national election. The tenure of the current election commission headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahamd will expire in February.

A 10-member delegation of the Islamic party led by its chairman Abdul Latif Nezami at the Durbar hall of Bangabhaban placed an eight-point suggestion to the President to form a search committee for the reconstitution of the commission.

The meeting lasted for 30 minutes.

The IOJ proposals include formation of the Election Commission with eight members instead of existing five members and a search committee comprising qualified and neutral individuals.

The delegation said people want to see a reliable and credible election commission. They said political problems need to be settled politically.

Describing the recently concluded Narayanganj City Corporation election as an ideal election, the party said the polls infused hope among the people of the country.

Earlier, President Abdul Hamid held talks with leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) over formation of new EC.

President’s press secretary Joynal Abedin said the BNF placed a five-point proposal, including one for appointing election commissioners in phases to maintain continuity of the EC.

The party president Abul Kalam Azad also proposed to include a retired Inspector General of Police (IGP) in the EC.

During the discussion, President Hamid said the opinion of political parties is very important for formation of new EC.

Different political parties are placing constructive proposals, which will play positive role in forming a strong commission.

President Abdul Hamid initiated the formal talks with political parties regarding formation of the EC. He held talks with BNP first on December 18.
