Sheikh Jamal’s birthday celebrated

Dhaka – Sheikh Jamal was born on this day in 1954, and the Bangladesh Awami League party has been celebrating the 66th birthday of the son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman paying respect to him.

A freedom fighter and later army officer, Jamal was among the victims of August 15, 1975 massacre when Bangabandhu along with most of his family were assassinated by a disgruntled army officers at his home in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.

The ruling party and its associate bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the birthday.

Leaders of the AL led by its acting general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif placed floral wreath at the grave of Jamal, who was also fond of cricket.  

Born on April 28 in 1954 at Tungipara of Gopalganj, Sheikh Jamal did his matriculation from Dhaka Residential Model College and intermediate from Dhaka College. He joined the War of Liberation in 1971.

While studying at Dhaka College, Jamal traveled to Yugoslavia for military training under the auspices of the Yugoslav army, according to state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency. He also received training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Britain. He joined the Bangladesh Army as a Commissioned Officer.
