Dhaka – Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday declared Shakhawat Hossain as mayoral candidate for Narayanganj City Corporation election slated for December 22 voting, the party said.

The nomination for Shakhawat, a former district unit president of lawyer association, came at a meeting of the party’s standing committee with the leaders from the grassroots on Monday night.

Senior joint secretary general Rizvi Ahmed made the announcement public at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters, Dhaka.

Earlier, the ruling Awami League party of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina nominated incumbent mayor Selina Hayat Ivy as the mayoral candidate.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia finalized her party candidate in consultation with the local leaders.

Many of them had proposed district BNP President Taimur Alam Khandakar as mayoral candidate, but he regretted not to contest the polls this time round.

Khaleda urged her party leaders to make a pledge to work together for the party candidate.
