Shahidul Islam new envoy to US

M. Shahidul Islam, a career diplomats with many feathers on his cap, was on Thursday appointed as Bangladesh’s ambassador to the United States.

Until his new posting, he was the Secretary General of the Dhaka-based Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

During his stint as the envoy to France and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Islam played a key role in upholding Bangladesh’s interest and worked under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to publish the French version of the Unfinished Memoirs of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 2017. 

During his term international recognition of Bangabandhu’s historic 7th March Speech came and he was successful in including the historic speech on the Memory of the World (MOW) International Register. 

Shahidul Islam’s other important achievement was UNESCO’s endorsement of the International Mother Language Institute (IMLI), Dhaka as a UNESCO Category II institution.

The new ambassador to Washington is a student if Dhaka University’s International Relations department and did his post-graduation in Diplomacy and French language from the International Institute of Public Administration in Paris, France.
