Shafiq Rehman released on bail

Dhaka – A pro-BNP journalist arrested in April over an alleged plot to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son was released on bail on Tuesday, officials said.

Shafiq Rehman, an editor of a now-defunct weekly magazine, came out of Kashimpur Jail after his bail order reached the prison in the noontime.

He was granted bail for three months in the case over the plot to kill Sajeeb Wazed Joy, also the Prime Minister’s ICT adviser, in the United States.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the bail order on August 31 after hearing Rehman’s plea seeking bail in the case although a similar petition was rejected by the High Court on June 7.

Rehman is likely to for medical care at BIRDEM hospital, a family member said.

Police on April 16 arrested him and seized a number of documents conducting a search at his home in Eskaton on the following day. The documents were related to his contacts with an agent of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Mashrur Rahman Khaled, deputy commissioner of police at the detective branch, had said that the lawmen were looking for the evidences of his meetings with the persons who plotted the abduction and killing of Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of the Prime Minister, in 2012 in the United States.

Investigators said that Rehman has a series of meetings with a leader of the Jasas, the cultural wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and his son in 2012.

A US court has convicted son of the BNP leader over bribing a FBI agent to abduct and kill Joy.
