Security beefed up ahead of Narayanganj mayoral polls

Dhaka – Security has been beefed up in Narayanganj as nearly half a million people set to cast their vote in the mayoral polls Thursday in the city, just 20 kilometers away from the capital Dhaka.

Paramilitary troopers from Border Guard Bangladesh, posted as striking force, started patrolling streets in Narayanganj from Wednesday to maintain order during and after the polls to be contested mainly between ruling Awami League party and the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The election authorities have sent out polls material at 174 voting centers as all other preparations were completed, Returning Officer Nuruzzaman Talukder said.

More than 4,000 election officials will conduct the balloting between 8am and 4 pm without a break. Seven mayor candidates, 156 candidates for 27 councillor posts; 38 women are running for 9 seats reserved for the women as councilor.

The electioneering for the mayoral polls came to an end on Tuesday night.

The candidates ended their campaigns officially on Tuesday night, two days before the voting.

The Returning officer said stern actions will be taken if anyone found involved in activities against a fair election.
