Dhaka – The Election Commission has announced schedule for elections in five city corporations with staggering voting dates, officials said on Monday.
The commission at a meeting on Monday decided to hold elections in Gazipur, Khulna, Barishal, Rajshahi and Sylhet cities as tenures of elected representatives in those local government institutes are set to expire.
Secretary to the Election Commission Jahangir Alam said Electronic Voting Machine will be used in the elections, and closed-circuit cameras would be installed in the polling booths for better surveillance on the voting day.
According to the schedule, voting in Gazipur City Corporation will be held on May 25, followed by Khulna City Corporation and Barishal City Corporation on June 12. Voting in Rajshahi and Sylhet city corporations will be held on June 21.
The last date for filing nomination papers in in Gazipur City Corporation is on April 27. The election authorities will scrutinize candidature on April 30. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is set for May 8. The voting will be held on May 25.
In Khulna and Barishal, last date for filing of nomination paper is on May 16, scrutiny on May 18, withdrawal of candidature on May 25, and voting on June 12, according to the schedule.
May 23 has been fixed for filing candidature in Rajshahi and Sylhet cities. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be on May 25, withdrawal of nomination paper on June 1, and voting on June 21.
