Samyabadi Dal suggests council for EC reconstitution

Dhaka – Left-leaning Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal has suggested a constitutional council to reconstitute the election commission for credible holding of the national and local elections.

The proposed council will comprise of the Prime Minister, Speaker of parliament, chief justice, opposition leader and the attorney general. The proposed panel will put forward the names of the election commissioners to reconstitute the quasi-judicial body, according to the left-leaning party.

BSD made the suggestion Wednesday at a meeting with President Abdul Hamid at the Bangabhaban as the president invited the party for a series of dialogue on reconstitution of the election commission. The tenure of the current election commission headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahamd will expire in February.

President’s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told reporters that the BSD general secretary Dilip Barua led a 12-member delegation to the discussion at the Darbar Hall.

The party placed a nine-point proposal over the formation of a search committee and the new commission during the 55-minute meeting.

BSD also proposed an enactment as per the constitution to form the Election Commission with people who are non-communal, progressive and skilled in administrative activities.

The president, during the talks, thanked the   delegation saying the suggestions by the party would play a positive role towards reconstitution of the election commission.

Hamid, formally began the talks with political parties on December 18, will appoint the commissioners and the chief election commissioner in line with the recommendations from the parties.

The president had a dialogue with Bangladesh Nationalist Party, an opposition outside parliament, and few other parties registered with the election commission. He is scheduled to hold talks with the ruling Awami League party headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on January 11.
