President Hamid begins his second consecutive tenure

Dhaka – President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday began his second consecutive term in office by paying respect to Bangladesh’s independence architect Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyrs of liberation struggle.

Hamid sworn in as the 21^st president of the republic on Tuesday as he was elected unopposed ahead of his tenure expired earlier this year.

The President placed a floral wreath at the portrait Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the capital in the afternoon.

Placing the wreath, he stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to memories of Bangabandhu.

Hamid also placed a wreath at the National Martyrs Memorial in Savar as a mark of tribute to the memories of the martyrs of the 1971 war of liberation.

Abdul Hamid also signed a visitors’ book, where he respectfully recalled the contribution of the Liberation War heroes.

The President was accompanied by chiefs of three services, local lawmaker, Liberation War Affairs Ministry secretary and secretaries concerned to Bangabhaban at about 3:05 pm. He was flown to Savar by a helicopter.

Earlier, a contingent of President Guard Regiment (PGR) gave the re-elected President a guard of honour at the Credential Field inside the President’s Palace as a state ceremony for the newly elected head of the state.

He exchanged views with the Bangabhaban officials.

Hamid took oath as the 21th President of the country Tuesday, 77 days after the Election Commission declared him the new head of state. He alone had submitted nomination paper for the position of the President.
