Police kill suspected militant in Dhaka

Dhaka – A suspected Islamist militant linked to the July attack on a restaurant in Bangladeshi capital was killed in a gunfight with police in Dhaka’s Rupnagar neighbourhood, police said on Friday.

The slain suspect was identified as Murad alias Major Murad, police officer Snawar Hossain said.

The officer said acting on tip-off the police raided a militants’ den at Road 33 of Rupnagar at around 7.30 am. The militants attacked the police leaving at least three officers injured. The lawmen retaliated with bullets leading one of the suspected terrorists killed on the scene.

Murad is learnt to have member of the faction of banned Islamic outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh and was a deputy of the Gulshan attack mastermind Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, who was killed in a Narayangan raid on August 27.

Two other suspected militants were killed in the police raid.

Earlier on July 26, nine suspected terrorists were killed when members of the counterterrorism unit raided a den of militants in Kalyanpur neighbourhood in Dhaka.

On July 1, suspected Islamist militants killed 20 civilians, 17 of whom are foreigners, at Holey Artisan Bakery.
