Motorbikes account for most road-crash deaths in Bangladesh

by Staff Correspondent,

Dhaka – Motorbikes accident claims the highest number of lives in Bangladesh thanks to the bikers’ callousness and over-speeding as a civic group counted some 585 deaths from road crashes in January.

Bangladesh Passengers Welfare Association at a press conference said on Saturday that its monitoring unit was reported 593 road accidents, killing 585 people and injuring 899 others.

Of them, some 205 people were killed and 114 wounded in accidents involving motorbikes, the association said adding that road crashes involving buses, trucks and pickup vans, mini-buses, auto-rickshaw and other locally made vehicles account the rest of the deaths.

Forty-five people died of train accidents while 11 others were died in engine-boat mishaps in the first month of the year, said the association, which prepared the report monitoring the news from local, regional and national dailies.

The report said the rate of accidents rose by 5.3 per cent in January compared to the accidents records in January 2022. But the number of casualties was 4.6 per cent less than that of the last year.

Experts say lax implementation of regulations and lack of awareness among road users are responsible for road fatalities in Bangladesh.
