Militant suspect tries killing himself, say police

Dhaka – A police officer on Sunday said that a suspected militant tried to kill himself as the lawmen raided a den in Dhaka’s Azimpur area Saturday evening.

The suspects attacked the police and most probably tried to kill themselves by detonating grenades, police spokesman Masudur Rahman told local media Sunday, a day after the lawmen captured three suspected female members of a militant outfit after killing a man.

Police said the man killed in the Azimpur raid was primarily identified as Abdul Karim alias Jamshed.

Karim had allegedly rented a flat for the militants who carried out the attacks on Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1 where 20 civilians, mostly foreigners, were killed.

Police chief Shahidul Hoque also said the dead man was identified as Abdul Karim.

Five security personnel and the suspected females were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as police said there was a gunfight with the terrorists at Azimpur.

The ‘gunfight’ erupted at around 7.30pm when the members of the counter-terrorism unit of the police raided the den at a house No. 209/5 near Azimpur graveyard around.

Police earlier killed nine militants when they raided a den in Dhaka’s Kalyanpur area on July 26. Three more terrorists, including one of the masterminds of the attacks Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, were killed in another raid in Narayanganj late last month.
