Khaleda Zia to be transferred to Keraniganj jail

Dhaka – Jailed former Bangladeshi prime minister Khaleda Zia will be shifted to Keraniganj Central Jail from the old jail building in Dhaka’s Nazimuddin road, a senior minister said on Tuesday.

Khaleda, also the chief of opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was transported to the old jail building after a court in February 2018 convicted her in a graft case and sentenced to five years in jail for embezzling fund meant for orphans.

The 73-year old politician has been suffering from health complications, including arthritis. She is also accused in few other graft and criminal cases. The trial in those cases will be conducted inside the Keraniganj jail where a court has already been set up.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told reporters that the building where Khaleda Zia has been kept will be renovated. And the female cell in Keraniganj prison was made ready to accommodate her.

“She will not be sent to Keraniganj jail,” the minister said without mentioning the exact date when the BNP leader would be transported to the new jail.

Khaeda’s BNP party, which boycotted the early 2014 national election, secured six parliamentary seats in the December 2018 election. She was prime minister of the country for two terms in 1991-1996 and 2001-2006.
