Jubo Dal leader killed in Dhaka ‘shootout’

Dhaka – A leader of Jubo Dal, an associate body of opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was gunned down in a reported ‘gunfight’ with law enforcers on the outskirt of the capital Dhaka, said police on Saturday.

The gun battle occurred at Birulia in Dhaka’s Savar, leaving Shah-Alam Nayan, 44, organising secretary of Savar municipality unit of Jubo Dal, a youth wing of BNP.

Officer Mahabubur Rahman said Nayan was picked up from from his Mohammadpur residence in Dhaka on Friday night. He was taken along with members of the police to recover arms that he kept in a hidden place in Birulia.

His associates attacked the lawmen when the raided a den in the area and the police retaliated with bullets leaving Nayan killed on the scene.

The incident could not be independently verified.

Police said Nayan was wanted in 14 cases including for arson attacks on public transports, carrying out subversive activities, murder and abduction.
