Dhaka – Bangladesh’s parliament on Thursday unanimously adopted a proposal seeking seizure of moveable and immovable property own by the war crimes convicts and killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq told the parliament that a bill for enacting a new law will be placed at the parliament shortly to this end.

The House voted ‘yes’ when Deputy Speaker M Fazley Rabbi Miah placed the private members’ resolution moved by ruling party lawmaker Fazilatun Nesa Bappy.

Anisul Huq in a statement on the resolution said that the government would confiscate all the moveable and immovable assets of the convicted killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and war crimes convicts.

He said the bleeding of the Bangalee nation began with the killing of Bangabandhu on August 15 in 1975 and it still continues. No measures would be able remove the stigma that left on the nation with the killing of Bangabandhu.

Confiscation of the property owned by the persons convicted in crimes committed during Bangladesh’s 1971 war of liberation from Pakistan has been a long-time demand by the freedom fighters.

Parliament in 2009 unanimously adopted a resolution to prosecute the war crimes as number of elements under the leadership of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party aided the Pakistan army during the nine-month war. They also carried out atrocities on unarmed civilians.

In line with the resolution and her 2008 election pledges, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina set up a special tribunal to try the war crimes suspects, mostly from the Jamaat-e-Islami party. Abdul Kader Molla, Motiur Rahman Nizami, Qamaruzaman, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, Mir Quasem Ali of the Jamaat party and Salauddin Quader Chowdhury were hanged for their wartime crimes.
