John Kerry will be in Dhaka for nine hours

Dhaka – US Secretary of State John Kerry is expected to arrive in Dhaka Monday to discuss issues related to security, human rights and democracy in Bangladesh.

Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali is scheduled to receive the US Secretary at Shahjalal International Airport in the morning, officials at the ministry said.

Kerry will fly from Geneva by a special aircraft and he is expected to arrive in Dhaka at 9.25 am.

He will have official talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Ali to be followed by the lunch in Dhaka. The US politician will also meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Kerry, a democrat politician, who assumed office of US Secretary of State in 2013, will visit Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi at around 11:30am where he will pay homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

According to the foreign ministry and the US embassy in Dhaka, the US Secretary of State will visit K-TEX, a garment factory in the city’s Shewrapara in Mirpur at 3pm and Edward Kennedy Centre (EMK) at MIDAS Centre in Dhaka at 4 pm.

During his 40-minute stay in EMK centre, he will meet youngsters and civil society representatives there. He will also visit the residence of US ambassador in Dhaka and Chancery Complex of US Embassy in Dhaka at 5.05 pm.

Wrapping up his Dhaka visit, the US Secretary of State will leave for New Delhi at 6.40 pm tomorrow. Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque will see him off at the airport.

This will be his first visit in Bangladesh.
