Dhaka – The Prime Minister’s political adviser Hossain Toufique Imam has died at the age of 82, officials said on Thursday.
Imam had been undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka for nearly two weeks as he developed age-related complexities. He breathed his last 1.15 am, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
A retired bureaucrat, Imam had been serving as the political advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since 2014. Joined in the Pakistan Civil Service in 1962, he also served as the cabinet secretary to the government of Bangladesh during the Liberation War of 1971.
He was born in 1939. Imam studied economics in Rajshahi and Dhaka University, and did his post-graduate degree in development administration from the London School of Economics.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Hasina in separate messages expressed deep shock at the death of the former civil servant. He will be buried in Dhaka after the last funeral prayers at the Gulshan Jame Mosque.
