Government to build homes for evicted Santals

Dhaka – Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Wednesday said that the government would build homes for the Santals evicted from their homes in northern Gaibandha district.

The Prime Minister has asked the authorities concerned to build homes from them, the minister told reporters at his office.

Several hundred people of indigenous Santals community were evicted from their homes in Govindaganj of Gaibandha district earlier in the month.

Police firing killed at least three men of the indigenous community and local hooligans set fire to their homestead rendering them to remain in the open since November 6.

The Santals claimed that a faction of ruling Awami League party tried to occupy their lands while the police said they had been living on a government land for years.

The Home Minister said that the Santals will be rehabilitated under the sheltering project of the government.

Evicted Santals earlier refused government aid standing firm over their demand of getting their land back.
