The elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Saturday arrested a man nick-named “Golden Monir” as he rose to become a billionaire from a salesman in a shop — thanks to his smuggling skills.
After being under surveillance for some time, the RAB raided his luxury house in Dhaka and seized 10 million taka in cash, gold jewellery, unlicensed gun, luxury vehicles and alcohol among other things.
RAB Spokesman Ashik Billah told reporters that “Golden Monir” or Monir Hossain was about to flee to Dubai and he is a “dangerous hundi trader (illegal foreign exchange dealer) and land grabber.” He used Singapore and India for gold smuggling.
He was a salesman in a popular Dhaka market in the 1990s and gradually became a multi-billionaire.
A case has been lodged against Monir Hosssain and is being grilled by law enforcers for further information.
