Ghoraghat UNO critically injured after criminals attack at home

Staff Correspondent in Dhaka,

Unknown criminals have attacked an Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) at her official residence in northern Dinajpur district, leaving the victim in a critical condition, officials said on Thursday.

The assailants attacked Wahida Khanam, UNO of Ghoraghat upazila, and her father at their home early on Thursday.

Khanam suffered critical injury in her skull, which has caused profuse bleeding, physicians said after she was airlifted to Dhaka for improved treatment at National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital.

“There are fractures on her skull,” Prof Quazi Deen Mohammad, director of the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital (NINH) in Dhaka, told reporters adding that the victim was not fully conscious.

He suspect Wahida was hit with a metal object, and her condition was not stable.

“It is not possible to operate on her right now, we will take her to surgery as soon as her condition improves,” said the physician.

Police said the miscreants broke into the UNO’s residence in the early hours of the day through a window panel. They attacked Wahida and her father Omar Ali as the two were only staying at the government residence.

Ali has been given treatment at a hospital in Rangpur.

State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain hoped that the criminals will shortly be named and the mystery behind the attack will be resolved.
