Dhaka – Four people were arrested in connection with the murder of a journalist in north-western Bangladeshi district of Sirajganj, police said on Saturday.
The suspects include a local Awami League leader.
Journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul, 40, a correspondent of vernacular Dainik Samaka, was shot as two factions of the local ruling Awami League got involved in clash on Thursday.
He succumbed to his injuries on Friday when he was on the way to Dhaka for better treatment.
Police officer Rejaul Haq said one of the arrestees was identified as Nasir, a local Awami League leader.
On Friday night, the wife of the slain journalist Kamrunnahar lodged a case accusing 18 people including the incumbent Shahzadpur municipality mayor Halimul Haque Miru and his two brothers.
Lawmen have already arrested two brothers of mayor Miru, he said, adding that police was trying to arrest Miru soon as he went hiding after the incident.
Besides, the half-day shutdown has been enforced on Saturday till 2pm in the sub-district as the local journalists, Awami League and Chattra League called the strike to protest the killing of the journalist.
