Four dead as girder of under-construction BRT project falls on car in Dhaka

Dhaka: – Four passenger of a car died after a segment of a viaduct of the under-construction Bus Rapid Transit project feel on them in Dhaka, police said on Monday.

The tragic accident occurred in the afternoon at Jashimuddin of Uttara neighbourhood when the passengers were travelling by a private car through the airport road, officer Mohammad Mohsin said.

The concrete girder fell on the wine-colored car trapping four of its passengers inside when a small crane was moving the heavy concrete piece to the construction site. Two passengers were rescued and rushed to hospital with injuries.

Television footage show, hundreds of people from the adjoining areas crowded at the accident site as the rescuers from the Fire Service and Civil Defence department trying to release the car and pull the bodies from inside it.

The rescuers could not make any headway into the retrieve the bodies from inside the car or remove the large concrete girder in the first three hours.  

The BRT project was undertaken to connect Dhaka with adjoining Gazipur city to create a 20-kilometer separate lanes for specialized buses in 2012. The project was supposed to complete by 2016. But it took longer with rise in the cost of the project and immense suffering for the commuters on Dhaka-Gazipur road.
