At least four of a family died after a fire broke out at a colony in Gazipur district near Dhaka, officials said on Monday.
The fire broke out at around 5 am at the slum-like homes located Kalampur of Kaliakoir in Gazipur district, more than 40 kilometers north of the capital Dhaka, leaving at least 50 homes gutted, fire fighters said.
Kabirul Alam of Fire Service and Civil Defence department said the firemen took nearly an hour to douse the blaze, but it took four lives. Nearly 20 others were injured, he said adding most of the residents were asleep at that time of accident.
The fire might have originated from a leaked gas cylinder at the home of one resident and it engulfed quickly to other homes, mostly made of corrugated iron and bamboo shafts. Low-income group of people, mostly workers of different garment factories used to live in the settlement.
