Dhaka – A fire broke out at one of the largest slums in Dhaka burnt more than 200 homes to ashes on Sunday, firefighters said.
The fire, origin of which could not be known immediately, broke out at around 3pm and the firefighters needed nearly three hours to bring it under control. The firefighters say that 200 more homes were partially damaged during the fire.
Fourteen firefighting units rushed to the spot to douse the flame, an on-duty officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room said.
Television footage show that the fire engulfed quickly and ripped through the makeshift homes made of bamboos, woods and corrugated iron sheets. Many were seen demolishing their homes to prevent the fire from engulfing more areas.
Those who rendered homeless, mostly low income group of people, because of the accident remained in the open in the evening.
